When many people hear the word “history,” they think of something that happened long ago.
Covered wagons. Pioneer settlements. Historic buildings. Artifacts behind glass.
But history isn’t just something we study. It’s something we’re creating every day.
The story of Nebraska did not end with statehood, the homestead era, or even the major events we learn about in school. It continues with every generation that shapes our communities, preserves traditions, overcomes challenges, and contributes something new to the places we call home.
That’s why preserving history matters, not because it’s old, but because it’s ongoing.
Today's Moments Become Tomorrow's History
The photographs we take today, the stories we share, the buildings we preserve, and the traditions we celebrate all become part of the historical record.
Think about the events that have shaped Nebraska over the past few years. Communities have adapted to changing economies, celebrated milestones, welcomed new residents, recovered from natural disasters, and found innovative ways to keep local traditions alive.
Years from now, people will look back on these moments to better understand who we were and how we lived.
History has not frozen in time. It is constantly being written.
Why Younger Generations Should Care
For many younger Nebraskans, history can sometimes feel distant or disconnected from everyday life. But understanding history isn’t about memorizing dates and names, it’s about understanding how the world around us came to be.
The communities where we live, the roads we travel, the schools we attend, the businesses we support, and the traditions we celebrate all have stories behind them. Those stories help explain who we are and why our communities look the way they do today.
History also teaches valuable lessons about leadership, innovation, resilience, and change. It helps us understand challenges that previous generations faced and how they responded. In many ways, history provides context for the decisions we make today and the future we hope to build.
Most importantly, younger generations aren’t just learning history, they’re creating it. The stories, ideas, and experiences of today’s students, families, entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders will become part of Nebraska’s historical record for future generations.
Every Community Has a Story Still Unfolding
One of the most remarkable things about Nebraska is that every town and every county has a story that continues to evolve.
The history of a small-town museum doesn’t stop with the artifacts it displays. New exhibits are being created. New stories are collected. New generations step forward to volunteer, lead, and preserve local heritage.
The same is true for cultural organizations, libraries, schools, businesses, farms, and families throughout the state.
What we choose to save, share, and celebrate today helps shape what future generations will know about Nebraska.
WanderNebraska: History You Can Experience
One of the best ways to understand that history is ongoing is to get out and explore it.
That’s the idea behind WanderNebraska. While many people think of historical sites as places that simply preserve the past, the reality is that these sites are often at the heart of their communities today. They host events, welcome visitors, share local stories, and serve as gathering places that connect people to both their heritage and their future.
This year’s WanderNebraska program features 254 sites across the state, each offering a unique perspective on Nebraska’s people, places, and culture. Some tell stories that span centuries. Others highlight more recent chapters in Nebraska’s story. All of them remind us that history is not confined to a textbook.
When you visit a local museum, historical society, cultural center, or historic landmark, you’re not just learning about what happened there years ago. You’re helping ensure those stories remain relevant and accessible for future generations.
Preservation Is About the Future, Too
It’s easy to think of historical preservation as looking backward. In reality, it is equally focused on the future.
When a historical society digitizes photographs, restores a building, records oral histories, or develops educational programming, it is ensuring that future Nebraskans can learn from and connect with the people and events that came before them.
Preservation is an investment in future understanding.
Without it, important stories can disappear. With it, communities gain a stronger sense of identity, pride, and connection.
Why the Foundation's Work Matters
The Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation exists to help keep Nebraska’s stories alive, preserving the past while connecting people to the history that is still being written today.
Through programs like WanderNebraska, RoamNebraska Grants, scholarships, educational initiatives, and support for historical organizations across the state, the Foundation helps connect people to the places and stories that make Nebraska unique.
These efforts aren’t simply about protecting the past. They’re about strengthening the future by helping communities understand where they came from and where they’re going.
We Are All Part of the Story
History is happening right now.
The stories being recorded, preserved, and shared today will become the stories future generations rely on to understand Nebraska.
Whether you’re volunteering at a local museum, attending a community event, exploring a WanderNebraska site, supporting historical preservation, or simply sharing your family’s story, you’re helping write the next chapter.
Nebraska’s history isn’t old. It’s ongoing and every one of us has a role in shaping what comes next.
