Courthouse and Jail Rocks Lighting Project
Help us illuminate these geographic icons of the Oregon Trail.
The Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation is gathering funding for the installation of permanent, low-impact lighting at Courthouse and Jail rocks — two of the most iconic landmarks of the westward migration. These formations hold immense cultural and historic value, and lighting them will enhance their visibility, promote heritage tourism, and strengthen regional economic development. The total cost of this project is estimated to be between $110,000 and $120,000.
Courthouse and Jail Rocks, located near Bridgeport are among the most notable landmarks of the westward migration. They were first documented in 1812, by explorer Robert Stuart and quickly became guiding landmarks for the fur traders, emigrants, and pioneers. They are mentioned in many pioneer diaries and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the Nebraska Natural Area Register.
Bridgeport has been officially designated as Trail City U.S.A., as it sits close to multiple historic routes: the Oregon Trail, California Trail, Mormon Trail, Great Western Trail, and Sidney-Deadwood Trail. Additionally the area is home to significant sites related to the Pony Express and telegraph. Courthouse and Jail rocks are visible from these routes and stand as timeless symbols of Nebraska’s pioneer heritage.

Project Objectives
The goal of this project is to install appropriate, historically respectful lighting that will:
- Increase public visibility and appreciation of Courthouse and Jail Rocks, especially during the evening and nighttime hours.
- Encourage longer visits and overnight stays in the Bridgeport area, thus benefiting local businesses and the regional economy.
- Complement the lighting of Chimney Rock to create a unified and visual compelling nighttime experience of historic trail landmarks.
Community Support and Endorsements
This initiative has received endorsements from the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition which encompasses 21 counties in the panhandle region and the Nebraska State Historical Society. These organizations work together to promote tourism and preserve Nebraska’s history to help bring awareness of these nationally significant landmarks. Many area community members and business leaders are also excited about this opportunity to light Courthouse and Jail Rocks, and are seeing this project as a unique way to not only showcase local heritage but also as a way to attract visitors.
